Teaching through Noah and the Flood

We are just beginning our homeschool journey with our children.  We began preschool with my three and a half year old in January of this year.  I try to include my two year old where I can and where I think she will benefit.  Right now I am not using a curriculum for my daughter's Bible lessons.  We are going through the Baptist Catechism during our Family Worship time during the evening, but during the day I have just been going through a hodge podge of things I think would be good for her to know or memorize.  So far we have gone through the story of Creation and the Fall of Man and she has memorized the days of Creation.  Of course, we took some time to go through Christ's death and resurrection for Easter.  I thought that going through the story of Noah and the Flood seemed like a logical next step.  I always begin by reading the story straight from Scripture - an adult Bible.  I believe that we should never forgo God's Word in fear that it will be above our children's heads.  There is great power in the words of God and we should never skimp on presenting the precious words of God to our children in the name of entertainment or fear for a lack of understanding.  I just wanted to share with you the resources that we used to complete our lesson this week on Noah and the Flood.  We had a lot of fun and got pretty creative, which always means a mess to clean up in our household!

DAY 1

I am a HUGE fan of the Confessions of a Homeschooler Blog.  This mother of four provides so many resources from free printables for Pre-school along with tips, recipes, ideas, and giveaways all centered around homeschooling.  For our Noah's Ark lesson, I used some of her free rainbow themed printables.  My daughters did not even know what rainbows were so my 3.5 year old completed the Color By Number Rainbow Sheet and my two year old completed the "Rainbow" begins with the letter "R" Coloring Sheet.  We talked about the rainbow that God set in the sky after Noah and his family left the ark and the covenant that, that rainbow represented.

DAY 2

We re-read the story of Noah and the Flood.  The first day we read it straight from my Bible, but today we read it from the girls' children's Bible.  The internet came to my rescue concerning the day's lesson.  YouTube provided our music and video and Pinterest provided our craft.

Song Lyrics to "Arky, Arky"

Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Children of the Lord
The Lord said to Noah:
There's gonna be a floody, floody
The Lord said to Noah:
There's gonna be a floody, floody
Get those children out of the muddy, muddy
Children of the Lord

So Noah
He built him, he built him an arky, arky
Noah
He built him, he built him an arky, arky
Built it out of gopher barky, barky
Children of the Lord

The animals, the animals,
They came in by twosie, twosies
The animals, the animals,
They came in by twosie, twosies
Elephants and kangaroosie, roosies
Children of the Lord

It rained and poured
For forty daysie, daysies
It rained and poured
For forty daysie, daysies
Nearly drove those animals crazy, crazies,
Children of the Lord

The sun came out and
dried up the landy landy
The sun came out and
dried up the landy landy
Everything was fine and dandy, dandy
Children of the Lord

Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Children of the Lord

The animals they came off
They came off by three-sies three-sies
Animals they came off
They came off by three-sies three-sies
Grizzly bears and chimpanzee-sies zee-sies
Children of the Lord

Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Children of the Lord.

That is the end of,
The end of my story, story
That is the end of,
The end of my story, story
Everything is hunky dory, dory
Children of the Lord

Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Children of the Lord

The girls have not stopped singing this song since, so I apologize if it gets stuck in your head the way that it has mine.  Our craft was probably my favorite of our Noah's Ark adventure.  The girls and I had so much fun making this, and I even broke out the glitter.  Glitter is my mortal enemy so it was a big deal!  You can find the directions and links to free animal printables at Mama Jenn.  Thank you for joining us on our lesson covering Noah and the Flood!

  1. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm going to start homeschooling my oldest this fall (he'll be 5), and my youngest who will be 3 is probably going to learn just as much or more...my 5 year old is a little slower to learn certain things, whereas Logan is super smart when it comes to book smarts. I'm really looking forward to it, but at the same time really overwhelmed with the whole process (legalities and what I need to do with the district, the financial cost, the sheer number of different websites with helps and printables)...it's mind-boggling to try to get it all figured out and even know what he needs to learn at the preschool age! Craziness.
